Independent Education Consultant
World Language Educator
Growing up in the Caribbean meant being exposed to a myriad of world views. By extension, it also means being exposed to just as many people and the cultures they identify with. I started as an undergraduate student in the programa de Licenciatura en Educación Mención Lingüística Sincrónica del Inglés [BSEd in English Linguistics] at Universidad de los Andes, in my native Venezuela. My professors came from around the country and the world: Mérida, Maracaibo, and Caracas; England, USA, Spain, Italy, Colombia, and the West Indies, if my memory serves me well. Such a multiculturally rich environment was instrumental in learning about world languages and how they would influence my academic interests during my professional development as a language educator. Years later, I completed my MA in TESL and Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University sponsored by the Fulbright Program. I hold a PhD degree in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Applied Linguistics also from Northern Arizona University. Currently, I am an associate teaching professor of Spanish and the coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in Education, Secondary Education Program in Spanish. I have teaching experience in languages for specific purposes, general and applied linguistics, and teacher education in Venezuela, Colombia, and the United States. While teaching courses in those topics, I developed scholarly interests that include pedagogical applications of corpus tools and methods for teaching Spanish, vocabulary acquisition, curriculum and materials design, and teacher education.
